Key features at a glance
Live Traffic Awareness
See nearby ADS-B aircraft directly on your flight map, with aircraft type, direction, distance and configurable altitude filtering to keep the display focused on relevant traffic.
The app uses your phone's GPS position to request nearby aircraft from the online adsb.fi and adsb.lol feeds. Reports from both sources are combined, with duplicate aircraft merged into one traffic entry.
Aircraft are shown on the 2D map with their reported position and direction. Aircraft details and distance help you identify nearby traffic, while the configurable altitude filter lets you focus on aircraft closer to your level.
Internet traffic or a dedicated receiver?
Our approach combines reports from a network of ground receivers over the internet. A dedicated device such as SkyEcho receives compatible aircraft transmissions directly over the air. Each approach has strengths and limitations.
| Consideration | Our internet-fed traffic | SkyEcho direct reception |
|---|---|---|
| Range and coverage | Pro: network coverage can show aircraft beyond the reception range of a single onboard device. Con: coverage depends on ground receivers and the app's nearby-traffic search area; it is not unlimited. |
Pro: receives nearby aircraft without relying on an internet feed. Con: limited radio range and line of sight; terrain, airframe shielding and device placement can reduce reception. |
| Mode S and MLAT | Pro: can include positions for Mode S-only aircraft when the providers supply MLAT results. Con: MLAT needs enough suitably placed ground receivers; not every Mode S aircraft will have a position. |
Con: cannot independently locate Mode S-only aircraft using MLAT. Direct ADS-B reception relies on aircraft broadcasting their position, so it does not provide the same ground-network MLAT coverage. |
| Connectivity | Con: fresh reports need an internet connection. Mobile coverage may be poor at altitude or in remote areas. | Pro: direct reception works without mobile data, with traffic delivered to a compatible app over local Wi-Fi. |
| Report delay | Con: receiver networks, processing and internet delivery add delay. Displayed positions may lag behind the aircraft. | Pro: direct reception avoids internet-feed delays. Con: updates still depend on aircraft transmissions and successful reception; reception can be interrupted. |
| Equipment and cost | Pro: no separate traffic receiver to buy, mount or charge. Con: uses phone power and mobile data. |
Con: additional hardware to purchase, position and keep powered; a compatible display app is also needed. |
| Being seen by others | Con: internet tracking and Wi-Fi traffic sharing do not transmit ADS-B Out and do not make the phone visible to airborne ADS-B receivers. | Pro: SkyEcho can also transmit ADS-B Out where permitted and correctly configured, helping compatible receivers see your aircraft. Local rules and installation restrictions apply. |
What is MLAT? Multilateration estimates an aircraft's position by comparing when its transponder replies reach several ground receivers. This can locate some Mode S aircraft that do not broadcast an ADS-B position; a single portable receiver cannot perform that network calculation on its own.
SkyEcho capabilities vary: it is not accurate to describe every configuration as ADS-B only. Other traffic services, including TIS-B where available, depend on the model, region and compatible software. See the manufacturer's specifications and pilot guides for supported services and operating restrictions.
Different strengths: internet feeds can broaden the traffic picture, including available MLAT positions. A dedicated receiver offers local reception without mobile coverage. Neither approach guarantees that every aircraft will be visible, and internet-fed traffic is not a replacement for certified collision-avoidance equipment.
Coverage matters: this is internet-fed traffic, not a direct ADS-B receiver in your phone. Mobile connectivity, receiver coverage and reporting delays affect what you see. Some aircraft may be missing or their positions out of date; an empty map does not mean clear airspace.
Intelligent Collision Warnings
Closing rate, vertical separation and estimated time to impact drive prominent map highlights, system notifications and spoken warnings with clock position and relative altitude.
The system compares your flight data with nearby aircraft reports, considering how quickly the distance is closing, the vertical separation and the estimated time to impact. These estimates help identify potentially conflicting traffic rather than treating every nearby aircraft equally.
Warnings draw attention to traffic with map highlights, system notifications and spoken alerts. Clock-position directions and relative altitude help you know where to look.
Advisory only: estimates depend on the available GPS and traffic reports. Delayed data, missing aircraft or changes in flight direction can affect warnings. This is not a certified collision-avoidance system, does not provide avoidance commands and does not replace visual lookout. No warning does not mean no risk.
SkyDemon & GDL90 Integration
Broadcast your live position and nearby traffic to SkyDemon and compatible EFB apps on the same phone or over Wi-Fi and personal hotspot. A reliable 4 Hz stream keeps slower receiving devices connected.
Completely Free — No Ads
Download, use and enjoy every feature at no cost, forever. No in-app purchases, no premium tier, no advertising.
Live Public Tracking
Anyone can follow your flight in real time on gyropilots.org/livetrack/. Share the link before take-off and let your family watch you fly from any device.
Public / Private Mode
Want to fly incognito? Toggle your flight to private before take-off and your position stays visible only to you.
Instant Push Notifications
Takeoff, landing and safety alerts now land straight on your phone the instant they happen — no more constantly checking your email. A massive upgrade for anyone following your flight.
Takeoff & Landing Alerts
Configure the app to automatically notify friends and family the moment you start or end your flight — delivered instantly as a push notification, with email as a backup.
Safety Watchdog
Set a timeout interval and the system sends an instant push notification (plus a warning email) if no GPS updates arrive within that window — peace of mind for loved ones back home.
Live GPS Map
Watch your flight path draw itself in real time on a full-screen interactive map. Zoom, pan and review your complete route after landing.
Keeps Tracking in the Background
Lock your phone, take a call or switch to another app — GPS tracking, live sharing and alerts all keep running uninterrupted in the background.
Artificial Horizon
A live attitude indicator driven directly by your phone's motion sensors — pitch, roll and yaw displayed graphically in real time.
Live Camera Streaming
Watch your onboard camera feed live inside the app. Use any RTMP/SRT-capable camera, or our turn-key RPI Streamer solution.
Flight Timer & Stats
Track airtime, Hobbs meter readings and get a sunset countdown so you always know exactly how much daylight you have left.
Full Gyropedia Integration
Seamlessly connected to Gyropedia — the state-of-the-art flight management system. Create a flight on Gyropedia directly from the app, automatically start and stop the Gyropedia flight log as you fly, and upload your Hobbs directly from the app the moment you land.
Traffic information and warnings are advisory and depend on network connectivity and third-party ADS-B coverage. They do not replace visual lookout or certified collision-avoidance equipment.
Connect Gyropilots to SkyDemon
Gyropilots acts as a GDL90 Compatible Device, providing SkyDemon with your GPS position and nearby traffic without needing a separate device such as SkyEcho. Start flight tracking in Gyropilots, then follow these steps in SkyDemon:
Using another device? Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot. Keep Gyropilots tracking while SkyDemon is in flying mode.
