China Fills Key Industry Gap With New Self-Developed Autogyro Maiden Flight

by Tom Felici · 20 Aug 2026

China’s first self-developed forward-designed autogyro completed a successful 38+ minute maiden flight in Shandong, with all core systems and performance indicators meeting design and airworthiness requirements. The breakthrough fills China’s gaps in light autogyro forward design, airworthiness verification and full aircraft manufacturing, realizing key progress in core tech R&D and standardized airworthiness systems. An autogyro sits between helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft, with its rotor rotating by airflow instead of engine drive. China formerly relied on imports or licensed designs for such craft. Now the autogyro is expanding from an aviation hobby device to practical use in logistics, agriculture, emergency response and more, thanks to its aerodynamic advantages, high safety and flexible takeoff and landing.
